Iker Casillas announces retirement aged 39

Spain's World Cup-winning captain and goalkeeper, Iker Casillas has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 39.

Casillas played 167 times for Spain, winning the 2010 World Cup and the Euros in 2008 and 2012. The former Real Madrid skipper lifted 5 La Liga titles and 3 Champions League trophies during his time at the Santiago Bernabeu.

He joined Portuguese side Porto in 2015 from Real. The veteran shot-stopper suffered a heart attack during one of Porto’s training sessions in May last year. He had called time on his five-year spell with the Portuguese side in July after his contract expired.
