Floods across southern China have submerged fields, city streets, and even whole towns, state media reported on Friday (July 17).

State broadcaster CCTV showed footage of a town submerged by floodwaters in Tongling City, Anhui Province. Anhui and nearby Jiangxi and Zhejiang provinces have declared red alerts as heavy rain swelled rivers and lakes.

Thousands of soldiers and helicopters have been deployed to recover broken levees and rescue people trapped in the region.

Since the flood season began in June, 33 rivers in China have reached their highest levels in history.
