Iran ups production of medicine, PPE to curb coronavirus infections

Iran has begun increasing the production of medicine and personal protective equipment to fight against a possible second wave of coronavirus infections.
This comes after the Health Ministry warned that adherence to social distancing rules have dropped from 90 to 40 percent in major cities like Tehran, with most of the people using public transport without protective masks.
Speaking to Press TV, health officials said the infection rate has risen, given the reopening of much of the country’s economy. They warn that failure to act vigilantly could add to the burden doctors and nurses are shouldering. They criticize the public for ignoring the restrictions, which remain in effect, especially in workplaces.
Health experts said the new wave of COVID-19 cases has affected mostly southern parts of Iran, in particular the southwestern province of Khuzestan, where the government has moved to re-impose a lockdown.
In spite of a steadily-rising infection rate, authorities have been progressively lifting restrictions on stores, mosques, schools, offices and travel. They now face a dilemma over whether to re-impose controls, a move that will be unpopular and damage the economy, or hope that the contagion will somehow peter out.
