US support for Israel’s annexation plan spells war: Analyst

An American political expert has said that Washington's unrelenting support for the Israeli policy of annexing Palestinian lands will culminate in a war in the Middle East and that the conflict could claim tens of thousands of American lives. 

Mark Dankof, a journalist and former US Senate candidate, made the remarks in a phone interview with Press TV on Friday while commenting on the Israeli annexation of Palestinian lands and the convention of a UN Security Council meeting to address the issue later this month.

US President Donald Trump infuriated Palestinians in January, when he unveiled his much-delayed “deal of the century” during an event at the White House alongside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Trump repeats his hugely-controversial endorsement of occupied Jerusalem al-Quds as Israel’s “capital” as he outlines his administration’s self-styled Mideast plan.

The so-called “peace” plan — unanimously rejected by Palestinian groups — enshrines Jerusalem al-Quds as “Israel’s undivided capital” and allows the regime to annex settlements in the occupied West Bank and the Jordan Valley. The plan also denies the right of return for Palestinian refugees to their homeland, among other controversial terms.

Palestinians have warned that they will prosecute Israel at international courts if it goes on with the plan, with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas saying the Palestinian Authority’s agreements with Israel and the United States will be “completely cancelled” if Israel annexes the occupied West Bank.

“It really is amazing to look at this situation that’s going to be occurring on the 20th of May. We're going to have the UN Security Council look at the Israeli annexation policies,” Dankof told Press TV on Friday.

“The downside is, this is not really going to change anything in regard to what Israel is going to continue doing. why? Because the United States regardless of how compelling the evidence is, is going to continue supporting Israel at all costs, politically, economically and militarily if necessary. And any resolution that comes out of this UN Security Council that impacts Israel in an adverse way or forces them to comply with any semblance of international law is going to be vetoed by the United States,” he added.

The UN chief says Israel’s annexation plan in the West Bank will shut the door on the so-called peace negotiations with the Palestinians.

“Israel has been the driving force in the American involvement in these miserable Middle Eastern wars ever since 9/11; nonetheless, the United States continues to support them to the hilt in terms of money in terms of diplomatic support, and in terms of ultimately military support when that becomes necessary,” the US political analyst continued.

“The American public is not likely to wake up to what their Zionist occupied  government is doing until it's too late. I believe that there will be a war as a result of these Israeli policies. It will be a much wider war, than anything that we have seen up to this point in the Middle East, there will be thousands if not millions of people killed in this when it does happen, including thousands if not millions of Americans,” Dankof underlined.

"And ultimately, once again, we find that regardless of what comes out of this Security Council meeting on the 20th of May, that nothing is likely to change, other than a heightening of international outrage over what it is that Israel is doing a heightening of international outrage over the American support for these activities. And last but not least, all of this is sadly going to continue as far as the American government is concerned, until they get us into a war that hopefully the American people will resist, and then hopefully the American people will once and for all rise up," Dankof concluded.

Israel has become more brazen in its efforts to trample upon Palestinians’ rights since the 2016 election of Trump, who has unprecedentedly intensified Washington’s support for the regime.

Palestinian leaders voice their strong opposition to the so-called ‘peace’ plan which Trump is preparing to unveil, emphasizing the need for popular resistance against the scheme.

Trump has recognized Jerusalem al-Quds as Israel’s “capital,” relocating the American Embassy from Tel Aviv to the holy occupied city, and announcing a scheme that allows the regime to annex the land on which it has been building the illegal settlements.

More than 600,000 Israelis live in over 230 settlements built since the 1967 Israeli occupation of the West Bank. All Israeli settlements are illegal under international law.
