Taliban step up attacks amid ongoing prisoner swap with Afghan government

These days, the Taliban militant group and Afghan forces have intensified their offensives and bombings against each other across many parts of the country.
Northern Takhar and Jowzjan provinces of Afghanistan have seen fierce fighting between the militant group and Afghan military forces.
According to local officials, at least 30 Afghan military forces were killed in separate Taliban attacks there over the last week.
Afghanistan’s ministry of defense also says that over 70 Taliban militants, including a number of their commanders, were killed in separate military operations conducted by Afghan forces across the country, mainly in Wardak, Logar, Takhar and Ghaznni provinces over the same period .
In the eyes of some military experts, Afghan forces need to capture more territory, especially when the militant group still insists on war and violence.
Clashes between government troops and the Taliban have flared up while an ongoing prisoner swap is underway between Kabul and the militant group. The exchange of prisoners kicked off under the shadow of a US-Taliban peace deal that was signed in the Qatari capital Doha on February 29th.
The deal guarantees the release of 5,000 Taliban prisoners from Afghan jails. Under such circumstances, rights bodies call on all parties to approve a lasting ceasefire in order to bring peace and security to the entire region and beyond.
Confronting the growing Taliban attacks is not the only challenge on the way of the Afghan government as political dispute between President Ashraf Ghani and self-declared President Abdullah Abdullah is still brewing. That is why Afghans want their leaders to set aside their differences and put an end to the decades-long violence and bloodshed in the country.
