Curfewed Syrians cheer for health care workers fighting coronavirus

A street cleaner rests at empty Souk al-Hamidieh, as restrictions are imposed as measure to prevent the spread of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in Damascus, Syria March 24, 2020.

Syrians cheered and whistled from inside their homes as darkness fell on Tuesday night (March 31) in support of the country's health care workers fighting against the coronavirus outbreak.

Syria said its confirmed cases has risen to 10, including two deaths, but medics and witnesses say there are many more.

Officials deny a cover-up but have imposed measures including a nationwide night curfew to stem the pandemic.

In Syria, where nearly a decade of war has uprooted 6.1 million people and forced some 5.3 million to flee to neighboring states, the coronavirus is a new threat for communities ill-equipped to deal with it.
