Two more die in Iran of coronavirus as infections rise
Two more people have died of coronavirus in Iran as authorities order week-long closures in major cities to prevent more infections.
A spokesman of Iranian health ministry said on Saturday that the total number of people tested positive for coronavirus in Iran had reached 28, of whom five had died, including one earlier in the day.
Kianush Jahanpour said that eight out of 10 people who had contracted the virus between Friday and Saturday were in the central city of Qom, an epicenter of the outbreak in Iran where schools and gatherings have been suspended.
However, the governor of Iran’s Markazi province, located to the southwest of Qom province, said that one person who had heart complications died earlier in the day just before testing positive for coronavirus.
Ali Aqazadeh said that a doctor who had been infected several days ago while in the provincial capital of Arak was recovering.
The death reported in the Markazi province brings the toll from coronavirus in Iran to six, with most of them happening in Qom.
Aqazadeh said all schools, universities and sport halls in the province would remain closed for an entire week, a measure also adopted in the neighboring Qom province.
The Turkish health ministry also sent a tweet on Saturday correcting a previous statement about the number of coronavirus infections in Iran. It said health ministers of the two neighboring country had confirmed during a phone call that 28 people had tested positive for the virus as of Saturday.
More than 2,200 people have died of coronavirus since it began more than a month ago in the central Chinese city of Wuhan.
Countries like South Korea and Iran are reporting growing number of infections despite a fall in cases in China in recent days.
