US officials warn NATO members against Huawei
US officials have once more expressed concerns about the Chinese mobile company Huawei, warning that the tech giant posed a serious threat to NATO.
"If we don't understand the threat and we don't do something about it, at the end of the day it could compromise what is the most successful military alliance in history -- NATO," US Secretary of Defense Mark Esper warned the audience at the Munich Security Conference in Munich, Germany on Saturday.
He said Huawei was the "poster child" for China's "nefarious strategy" to infiltrate and dominate crucial western infrastructure.
Esper told NATO members not to allow Huawei to build new 5G communications networks -- that will permit near-instantaneous data transfers -- for them.
"Reliance on Chinese 5G vendors could render our partners' critical systems vulnerable to disruption, manipulation and espionage," Esper said. "It could also jeopardize our communications and intelligence sharing capabilities and by extension, it could jeopardize our alliances."
Washington has been pressing its NATO allies to ban Huawei, saying the Chinese firm posed a security risk.
US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has referred to Huawei as the manufacturer of the "Trojan horse for Chinese intelligence".
Key US ally in Europe, Britain, however, has said that Huawei poses too small a risk to necessitate banning it from building 5G networks.
