Thousands of people flooded Venice to experience the city's world-famous carnival, which was inaugurated on Saturday with a stunning night performance procession along its Cannaregio canal which turned into a water scene for dozens of artists.

Each year, the carnival attracts visitors from around the globe, from one-time tourists to loyal fans. Domizia and Michele attend the carnival every year, designing new costumes for themselves each year.

"It is a dream came true. We have fun every year dressing up because we feel like a part of the carnival", said Domizia. "The landscape, the monuments are incredible. Venice embraces you with its carnival", added Michele.

The attendees wearing their best costumes walked down the iconic San Marco square, catching admiring looks and posing for photographs with tourists.
