US Space Force unveils service uniforms with camouflage design amid criticism

The newly-created US Space Force (USSF) has unveiled camouflage uniforms bearing the branch’s first name tapes for its members amid mocking criticism as well as praise for the outfit.

“The first #SpaceForce utility uniform name tapes have touched down in the Pentagon,” the service branch tweeted from its official account on Friday night, attaching a photo of the uniforms.

The uniform depicts four-star rank, indicating that the uniform belongs to Gen. John "Jay" Raymond, the first commander of US Space Force. It also has the Command Space Operations badge embroidered above the service name tape.

This is while many social media users seized on the opportunity to mock the uniforms, asking questions such as “Why do we need camo in space?”

Another Twitter user wrote, “Camo in space? WTF? More wasted tax dollars. Great job!”

However, the uniforms were welcomed with praise by military outlets, including the official Twitter account for the US Navy, which called the clothing “out of this world” in a tweet.

Meanwhile, many questions remain about the new military establishment. Space Force has yet to announce a rank structure, a full system of uniforms or even what to call members of the new service, according to Military.com news outlet.

In a Thursday briefing, the report added, Pentagon spokesman Jonathan Hoffman said Raymond was developing a plan regarding every detail.

"We've got some steps to go through," he noted. "General Raymond's team has a -- a massive, incredibly well thought out and planned implementation process for ... uniforms, pay, songs, that they need to go through to get a Space Force ... I don't know the timeline on it but we can probably get you guys an update on some Space Force-related issues in the near future."

Responding to the criticism regarding the uniform, the USSF explained in a Saturday morning tweet that the branch had been utilizing uniforms from other military branches to prevent unnecessary costs.
