New York beefs up security ahead of New Year's Eve

The city of New York has beefed up it's security measures ahead of New Year's Eve when hundreds of thousands of revellers descend on the city's famed Times Square to usher in a new year and a new decade.

On Monday afternoon (December 30), police dogs trained to look for explosives were seen sniffing storage containers as armed police officers stood on high alert, weapons in hand.

This year the New York Police Department (NYPD) expects 1.5 million people to witness the glittering New Year's Eve ball make its annual descent at midnight, police officers told local media.
