On New Year’s Eve, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif visited Moscow with the aim of coordinating positions in international and regional issues as well as strategic partnership in the region.
The Iranian nuclear deal led the talks of top diplomats. Lavrov briefed Zarif on Russia’s efforts for preserving the important international agreement which the United States is trying to undermine.
Lavrov also expressed concerns over what he called some western countries’ efforts to fuel tensions in the Persian Gulf region. The Russian top diplomat emphasized that Moscow had put forward a concept aimed at ensuring regional security and Iran had come up with the Hormuz Peace Initiative.
According to Lavrov, both proposals are aimed at pooling efforts to stabilize the situation in the region. He also discussed the Syrian settlement, saying that joint Russian-Iranian efforts in the framework of the Astana format peace talks had yielded results.
Libyan crisis were among the topics of discussion as well as Russian Iranian bilateral relations, particularly in light of the agreements made by Presidents Putin and Rouhani including those concerning trade, economic and humanitarian cooperation.
After his meeting with Lavrov, Iranian Foreign Minister will travel to Beijing to exchange views and ideas on the 2015 nuclear agreement as well as other issues of common interest.
Iran and China are working together to develop bilateral relations, protect the JCPOA and maintain peace and stability in the Persian Gulf.
