US 2020 presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders slams the idea that billionaires are trying to “buy” the US elections in reaction to former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who on Sunday officially announced his candidacy for president of the United States.
"We do not believe that billionaires have the right to buy elections, and that is why we are going to overturn Citizens United, that is why multi-billionaires like Mr. Bloomberg are not going to get very far in this election, that is why we are going to end voter suppression in America," the Vermont senator said at his campaign event on Sunday.
Sanders also took to Twitter to threaten billionaires with a “strong union movement.”
“Nothing scares the billionaire class more than a strong union movement. We will fight for a union for every worker,” said the independent candidate.
Bloomberg’s bid for the White House has led to reactions from various groups and even officials from the White House, including White House Counselor Kellyanne Conway.
“His new ad that he put millions behind is all unicorns and rainbows. Keep your health care if you'd like to – and if you don't, I have something better. Rebuild America. We heard that from Obama-Biden,” Conway said on CBS. “Michael Bloomberg is saying rebuild America. America already elected a builder.”
The former mayor, who is estimated to be worth $54.1 billion, has said he will not accept donations and will fund his campaign on his own.
