Trump says impeachment process has been 'very hard on my family'
US President Donald Trump has complained that the impeachment inquiry into his actions on Ukraine that now threaten his presidency had been "very hard on my family."
“I have one problem. And it has been very hard on my family," he said at a campaign rally in Louisiana on Thursday, adding that "impeachment, to me, is a dirty word."
Democrats in the House launched an impeachment inquiry against Trump in September after a whistleblower alleged the Republican president pressured Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to investigate former Vice President Joe Biden and his son Hunter, who had served as a director for Ukrainian energy company Burisma.
Democrats say that Trump was engaged in “bribery” and “extortion,” abusing his office for personal political gain.
Trump further complained that the Democratic-launched impeachment looming over his presidency was both “crazy” and “unfair”.
"It’s been very unfair, very hard on my family. Me, it’s my whole life, it’s crazy," he said.
"What a life I lead. You think this is fun, don’t you? But it’s been very hard on my family. Very, very hard," he added.
In the meantime, Democratic leaders have described the Ukraine scandal entangling Trump as a big deal in comparison to the Watergate scandal which led to the resignation of Richard Nixon as the 37th US president.
"What Trump did in the Ukraine scandal "make[s] what Nixon did look almost small,” House Speaker Nancy Pelosi told reporters on Thursday.
"The president abused power and violated his oath by threatening to withhold military aid and a White House meeting in exchange for an investigation into a political rival," Pelosi noted.
The Speaker of the US House of Representatives said the evidence proved that Trump has resorted to "quid pro quo, bribery" for his own personal gain.
The impeachment inquiry into Trump’s actions toward Ukraine is damaging US diplomatic credibility in the Eastern European nation at a time when American foreign policy influence is already waning in that region, The Associated Press said in an analysis on Friday, citing foreign policy experts in Ukraine.
The impeachment drama unfolding in Washington is further bolstering Russia’s position along Europe’s geopolitical front line, with consequences around the region, the AP report said.
