Paris braces for transport chaos ahead of strike over pension reform

The last major Paris metro strike in 2007 was also called over plans to overhaul pension plans for transport workers.

Ten of Paris's 16 metro lines will be closed on Friday with the remainder severely disrupted, Paris transport authority the RATP announced on Thursday (September 12), meaning transport chaos across the capital after unions called a strike over government pension reforms.

Employees of the publicly-owned RATP benefit from a specific pension scheme with advantages including early retirement.

The government of French President Emmanuel Macron plans to simplify the system meaning one standard regime.

The strike is expected to cause mayhem on the subway and some suburban lines.

"I think tomorrow we'll see historic levels of participation," union representative from SUD-RATP Jonathan Dusautoir said, recalling massive strikes against pension reform in 1995.
