There was mounting speculation on Tuesday that the supertanker carrying 2.1 million barrels of Iranian crude oil, Grace 1, would be released Tuesday evening.

With both Gibraltar and Iran signaling ongoing efforts to de-escalate tensions in the wake of the ship's detention and with local people showing a desire for the matter to be resolved.

The controversy began when Gibraltar which is under British control seized the tanker on July 4th and it has been detained in straits of Gibraltar ever since.

The British allege that they were upholding EU sanctions as they claim the boat was on route to Syria.

The Iranians dispute these allegations and claim the seizure was an illegal act of piracy.

The action has severely worsened relations between the UK and the Islamic Republic particularly as they regard the action as being directed from Washington who have unilaterally pulled out of the JCPOA agreement and re-imposed sanctions against the Islamic republic of Iran.

The Gibraltar supreme court is set to reach a decision on the fate of the boat on Thursday 15th August.
