Europe’s inability to keep Iran in the deal

Four Years have passed since Iran has started implementing the JCPOA but even the EU has not taken any action so far.

The US made a big deal of this 2015 accord, by pulling out of it on May the 8th 2018. But Europe’s 3 powers Germany, Britain and France, the E3, were left behind to sweep up the mess; however, Europe has been trying to keep Iran in the Nuclear Deal or JCPOA. But it appears to be asking for responsibility in return for no rights. As a result, Islamic Republic of Iran decided to reduce its commitments.

In November the 2nd, 2018 Federica Mogherini and the E3 Foreign Ministers and Finance Ministers put out a statement deeply regretting the re-imposition of sanctions by the United States, due to the latter’s withdrawal from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action. In the same breath however, they expected Iran to continue implementing all its nuclear commitments in full, as set out by the JCPOA.

Iran complied as confirmed and re-confirmed by the UN Nuclear Watchdog, 15 times. But the US was deaf to those confirmations.

Iranian government decided to reduce its commitments under the deal which is totally in line with the regulations of the JCPOA. Article 36 of the JCPOA allows all the members of the deal to reduce their commitments if others parties fail to fulfill their obligations.

If the EU is worried, it should take action and not only defend its independence in its foreign policy and its prestige, save the deal by fulfilling their 11 commitments.
