Boosting regional security, Iran's main strategy: Iranian Majlis Speaker

Iran’s Majlis Speaker Ali Larijani says maintaining regional security is one of the main strategies of the Islamic Republic, warning that any form of foreign meddling only endangers the region.

“Security is achievable through (cooperation of) regional states and intervention by other countries would give rise to predictable threats,” he said in a meeting with visiting Omani Foreign Minister Yusuf bin Alawi in Tehran on Sunday morning.

“Some regional nations need to change their conduct if they seek sustainable security because their current behavior has paralyzed the region,” he added.

The Iranian parliament speaker further warned against Saudi Arabia’s “protracted war” on Yemen, noting, “The region’s capacity has a limit.”

Larijani further praised Oman’s role in boosting the region’s security as “positive.”

The neighboring state, he added, played a key part in the diplomatic process that led to the conclusion of a nuclear deal between Iran and six world states — the US, Britain, France, Germany, Russia and China — in 2015. Washington later left the deal and renewed its harsh campaign of economic sanctions against the Islamic Republic.

Larijani slammed the US’s withdrawal from the multilateral agreement in 2018 as an insult to many countries, including Iran and Oman.

Larijani pointed to Europe’s failure to live up to its commitments and protect Iran against the American bans, saying, “Unfortunately, the Europeans have not taken any measure (to save the deal) and it seems that they either failed or had no intention (to do so).”

Iran’s retaliatory decision to reduce parts of its nuclear commitments has been within the legal framework of the JCPOA, he empathized.

In turn, the Omani foreign minister said Tehran and Muscat share the goal of establishing lasting security in the region, hailing Iran’s pivotal role in preserving peace in the region.

Any incident that undermines the region’s security would harm all its nations, the top diplomat added.
