World military spending vs. poverty

World military spending

The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute has published its annual report on global military spending. The new research shows overall military expenditure saw a boom of 2.6 percent in 2018.

That’s a massive total of 1.82 trillion dollars; the highest since the cold war era. For decades now, the prominent think tank has been tracking data. Over the past decade, the top five countries leading the list of military expenditure have pretty much been similar. However, two things stand out. One is Russia; which dropped out of the top five last year. Two is Saudi Arabia, which has crawled in. Since the spring of 2015, Riyadh has been waging a war in Yemen.
