US actively conducting economic warfare against Venezuela: Analyst

Don DeBar

The United States has been actively conducting economic warfare against Venezuela for over a decade, an American political commentator says.

The US is stirring up an uprising in Venezuela, while showing support for a government crackdown on the mass protests in France, Don DeBar told Press TV in a phone interview on Tuesday.

Venezuela is convulsed by political crisis. Last week, Juan Guaido declared himself the “interim president” of the country, rejecting the presidency of Nicolas Maduro, who was sworn earlier after winning elections boycotted by the opposition.

Guaido, the president of Venezuela's opposition-led National Assembly, was immediately recognized by the administration of US President Donald Trump.

“In Venezuela, you have a situation in where the United States has been actively conducting economic warfare against the country intensively for over a decade," he said.

“In France you have an uprising in essence, that has been developing in slow motion over a long period of time primarily driven by decades of austerity, a massive transfer of wealth from the working and middle class to a transnational capital to the impoverishment of the middle-class, and the workers in general,” he said.

The French government’s response to the uprising, which has been brutal, is not covered by the Western media, DeBar noted. “The French government is not representative of the French people.”

In contrast to France, Venezuela -- probably -- has one of the most honest electoral systems in terms of accountability and transparency in the world, according to the American political commentator. He said that Venezuela was also one of the most patient governments with dissent.

DeBar said the poor and impoverished people in the Latin American country have been doing much better in the past twenty years since when the late Hugo Chavez and his leftist government rose to power. “All measures show that their situation has improved.”

“The problems with the economy are based upon the economic warfare that the US is conducting,” DeBar said in his conclusion of the situation.
