Trump says ‘no amnesty for Dreamers,’ warns Pelosi

US President Donald Trump (L) and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi

US President Donald Trump insists he will not allow “amnesty” for the young undocumented immigrants, who were brought to the country as children amid an ongoing government shutdown.

“No, Amnesty is not a part of my offer,” Trump tweeted on Sunday, referring to a set of proposals he had made in a White House address a day earlier to end the roughly-one-month-long shutdown.

The deal included giving about one million immigrants a three-year protection from deportation in exchange for $5.7 billion in funding for a wall along the US southern border.

The one million comprises 700,000 of the young immigrants, known as Dreamers, who remain protected by the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, and 300,000, who fled their countries and are facing the expiration of their "temporary protected status."

“It is a three year extension of DACA. Amnesty will be used only on a much bigger deal, whether on immigration or something else,” Trump added.

The Democrats, who believe funding a wall is unnecessary, turned down the deal outright, saying it did not ensure permanent protections for the one million.

House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi called the offers "a compilation of several previously rejected initiatives, each of which is unacceptable and in total do not represent a good-faith effort to restore certainty to people’s lives."

Trump also threatened Pelosi, signaling that if his proposals remained unheeded by the Democrats, he could initiate a push for mass expulsion of illegal migrants in the country.

“There will be no big push to remove the 11,000,000-plus people who are here illegally-but be careful Nancy!” he cautioned.

“Nancy Pelosi and some of the Democrats turned down my offer yesterday before I even got up to speak,” the US president blasted. “They don’t see crime and drugs,” he noted, blaming the migrants for the country’s social ills.

He also suggested that the Democrats were antagonizing him to preempt a repeat of his 2016 electoral victory, expressing confidence that they will not conquer the White House in the next elections either. “They only see 2020 - which they are not going to win,” he tweeted.

“Best economy! They should do the right thing for the Country and allow people to go back to work,” Trump added, citing the country’s economic performance under his presidency, which featured a boost, partly thanks to Washington’s hugely lucrative arms deals with its allied states.

Trump finally accused Pelosi of leaning too much to the left to the point of becoming a “Radical Democrat.”
