Israel's dangerous Gaza incursion

The world saw a brief rise in tensions between the Israelis and the Palestinians this week before a ceasefire prevented what could become a new war between the two sides.

A heavy bombardment of the Gaza Strip by Israel left several Palestinians killed and destroyed some buildings. Tel Aviv said this was in response to a barrage of rockets fired by Palestinian resistance fighters.

But it did not specify what had triggered the violence. The final result was a botched spy operation by the Israeli intelligence into Khan Younes, an operation that left several Palestinian fighters and an Israeli officer killed. The course of events that ensued exposed a series of new realities.

They included the fact that the Israeli anti-rocket system is not as invincible as the Israelis pretend. Also, that the Israeli intelligence is prone to failures – again despite what Tel Aviv portrays.
