Why does Israel still occupy the Syrian Golan Heights?

As the Israeli local elections took place on October 30, hundreds of Druze protestors in the occupied Golan Heights, some carrying Syrian flags, gathered outside the gates of a polling station.

The Syrian government has strongly condemned Israeli municipal elections in the Golan Heights, stating that the Tel Aviv regime is seeking to legitimize its occupation there.

Israel captured the Golan Heights from Syria in 1967 and kept the territory under military rule until 1981 when the Knesset voted in favor of annexing it and applying Israeli law there.
