Has Germany forgotten lessons of brutal past?

According to the leading business newspaper Handelsblatt it was "an outpouring of hatred that shocked the nation." But it wasn't just Germany that was appalled by the sight of thousands of Far Right demonstrators overwhelming police in the eastern city of Chimnitz. Shockwaves ran throughout the EU and beyond.

While Chancellor Merkel's open door policy of welcoming nearly a million refugees has been blamed for causing a surge in support for the Far Right AfD party and the anti Islam Pegida movement, the issues run deeper. Despite receiving around €2 trillion since reunification in 1991, eastern Germany (the focus of most demonstrations) has remained relatively poor and resentful of foreigners and wealthier western Germans.
