Iran at 2018 Asian Games: Day 5 Highlights

On the fifth Day of the 2018 Asian Games in Indonesia, as Iran's Wushu practitioners in the Sanda discipline, have managed to pocket two gold and three silver medals.

In Men’s Sanda, and the -60 kg category, Erfan Ahangarian bagged a gold medal after defeating his Chinese opponent. Then, Forood Zafari in the -65 kg category won the silver medal after suffering defeat against his Chinese rival. And finally, Mohsen Mohammadseifi snatched the gold medal in the -70 Kg category.

In women’s Sanda, Elaheh and Shahrbanoo Mansourian grabbed silver medals in the -52 and minus 60 Kg categories, respectively, after being defeated by their Chinese Rivals. 

Meanwhile, in rowing, Iranian women won silver and bronze medals in lightweight quadruple sculls and double sculls respectively. 

In Taekwondo, team Iran grabbed two more medals to wrap up the Asian Games.

In the men's -68 kg category, Amir Mohammad Bakhshi was defeated by his Korean rival in the final to win a silver medal. In the semi-final clash, Bakhshi had inflicted a shocking defeat on Jordan’s 2016 Olympic champion.

And in the women's -49 kg category, Nahid Kiani won another bronze medal for team Iran.

With that, Iran’s Taekwondo team bagged two golds, a silver and two bronze medals to finish the Asian games with a precious record. 

In sport climbing, Reza Alipour clinched the 10th gold for Iran. The 24-year-old speed-climber overcame China’s champion in the final.

And finally, Iran's Sabre fencing team were downed by the world number 1, South Korea, adding another silver to Iran's tally.

Iran maintained their fourth position in the standings at the end of the fifth day of the Asian Games. Iran players have so far bagged 27 medals, keeping them behind top-ranked China, second-placed Japan, and third-placed South Korea. 

Over to Kabaddi, where Iran’s Men’s team have had an astonishing performance, as they beat India 27 to 18 in the Semi-finals. 

Iran upset India with a convincing win, to avenge their 2014 defeat in the final, and cut the Indians short of the Asian Games final for the first time in history. Now, Iran will meet Korea in the final, as India will have to face off with Pakistan for the bronze. 

Earlier, Iranian women also made their way to the final, with a win over Thailand, to meet India for the gold. 

On the other hand, in football, Iran’s under-23 team have suffered a 2-0 defeat to long-time rivals, South Korea, exiting the Asian Games before the quarter-finals. Hwang Ui-jo and Lee Seung-woo scored a goal apiece to eliminate Iran in the round-of-16 match. South Korea will face Uzbekistan in the quarter-finals.
