US economic sanctions against Iran doomed to failure: Writer

The US economic sanctions against Iran are an act of war meant to cause regime change but they are doomed to failure, says E. Michael Jones, an American political analyst in Indiana.

Jones, a writer, former professor, media commentator and the current editor of the Culture Wars magazine, made the remarks in a phone interview with Press TV on Wednesday.

On Monday, President Donald Trump’s National Security Adviser John Bolton said the United States is exerting “unprecedented pressure on the government of Iran to change its behavior.”

Bolton made the remarks shortly after Trump signed an executive order reimposing many sanctions on Iran to levy "maximum economic pressure" on the Islamic Republic.

Bolton claimed that the Trump administration is not attempting to change the government in Iran.

"Our policy is not regime change," he said. "We want to put unprecedented pressure on the government of Iran to change its behavior. And, so far, they've shown no indication they're prepared to do that."

“First of all, John Bolton is the biggest war monger in the United States of America. He’s totally under the control of the Israel lobby. He is speaking totally for Israel, in Israel’s interest and not in the interest of the United States of America,” Jones said.

“Secondly, what does he mean by this? First of all the economic sanctions are an act of war. So to say that you are not trying to bring regime change is preposterous. You have attacked Iran with a weapon of war. The economic sanctions are an instrument of war,” he stated.

“Why are they doing this? The answer is that Iran is a threat to Israel’s total hegemony over the Middle East. It’s probably the final obstacle in Israel exerting total hegemony over the Middle East. That’s the whole issue.  Bolton is speaking for the Israel lobby. Bolton is working for the neo-conservative faction -- the discredited neo-conservative faction with the Iraq war. And this is what the goal is,” he noted.

“And what he is talking about here? He’s talking about the ability of Hezbollah to project power into Israel, and hold Israel back from attacking other countries,” he stated.

“After Israel lured the United States into war against Iraq – the catastrophic war -- they brought about the very opposite of their intentions by putting the Shia in power and establishing basically a Shia crescent which stretches from Iran through Iraq, through Syria, through Lebanon and Hezbollah down into Gaza where it can be used to protect the Palestinians,” the commentator said.

“After creating a total debacle in Iraq, the Israelis ordered the United States to attack Syria. That attack has failed. So now the same group of people that lured the United States into two disastrous wars are now giving orders through their proxies, through their stooge, John Bolton, to launch even more disastrous wars against Iran,” he pointed out.

EU resisting US on Iran sanctions

“This is not going to work, OK, primarily because imprudent support of the Israel lobby, his termination of the JCPOA (Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action) has alienated the entire world, especially the four other powers that signed the agreement. And these powers are now going to unite against the United States and they are going to defy the sanctions. This is obvious now,” he observed.

“There have been speeches that the European Union has to do this if they want to maintain a European Union. This is a threat to the existence of the European Union. They see this as a deadly threat and they are going to act,” he said.

“Beyond that China and India have already announced that they are not going to stop buying oil from Iran. That is over two billion people. What is the United States going to do with the two billion people and add to that Russia which has weapons; they can probably negate anything that the United States can put anything on the field,” the writer noted.

“And what you see here is that Trump has over-reached the neoconservatives, the Israel lobby, and they brought about the exact opposite of what they intend. These sanctions are doomed to failure,” he concluded.
