France passes rail reforms amid ongoing strikes

French lawmakers have approved a controversial overhaul of the state rail operator. The vote comes despite stiff resistance from rail workers and their unions. The overhaul is part of the government’s economic program which has brought different sections of society, including the elders, into the streets in protest.
