FIFA boss Gianni Infantino has lavished praise on Russia for its preparations for the upcoming World Cup, telling President Vladimir Putin that the June 14-July 15 tournament could be the best in the history of the game in terms of organization by the host country.

“You are working to make this World Cup the best World Cup ever,” Infantino told Putin during a meeting in Sochi on Thursday, adding, “I am now involved in the organization of major world events for 20 years and the level of commitment, of dedication, of professionalism that you have in the organization of this World Cup is unique.”

The comments came against the backdrop of claims by Western governments and media that Russia is racing against the clock to prepare for the World Cup and their efforts to cast doubt on Moscow’s ability to finish construction of stadiums on time and contain hooliganism and racist chants during the prestigious tournament.

Infantino said FIFA experts had been very positive in their reports about Russia’s preparations for the World Cup.

“The feedbacks from all our experts at FIFA are extremely positive. And this shows that Russia is absolutely ready to host the world to celebrate a summer of festivities here in this beautiful country,” said the top official of the world’s football governing body.

The World Cup in Russia is the first for the tournament in Eastern Europe and according to some reports, it could be the most expensive ever.

The matches are planned in 11 cities and 12 stadiums across the European part of Russia in what is expected to be another major success for the country in hosting major sporting tournaments after the Winter Olympics in Sochi in 2014.

Putin, for his part, said the World Cup would be a major opportunity for the economic development of the host cities. He also urged players of the Russian national team to play with a resolve that matches the country’s organization efforts.

“We all very much hope that our players will commit themselves to the game, will give all they got, playing to their full potential," said Putin, adding, “And the most important thing, they must show hard-nosed, uncompromising football, one which the fans love.”
