An analyst believes Washington’s decision to maintain its military presence in Syria is a “profound mistake,” adding that it runs contrary to the US Constitution and the will of the American people.

US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson announced Tuesday that the US military will remain in Syria indefinitely, and spelled out a plan to advance a political transition in the country.

“Rex Tillerson is in a world of fantasy when he thinks that American people are going to tolerate an endless American presence in the Middle East and I think it is going to result in a civil war in America … America is a country that is starting to really break apart and it is because of things like this. Nobody in America wants these endless wars,” Scott Bennett, a former US army psychological warfare officer, told Press TV in an interview on Thursday.

“So Rex Tillerson’s statement is in violation of the United Nations, it is in violation of all of the rules of national sovereignty and I do not think Russia, Iran and Turkey are going to allow it,” he added.
