Israeli aggression

Israel has launched several attacks on the Syrian territory in the early hours of Tuesday. The Syrian army says Israel has carried out three attacks with warplanes and ground-to-ground missiles. The first attack targeted an army base near the city of Qutayfah. The Syrian air force says it has shot one of Israeli jets. Missiles were also fired from the occupied Golan Heights, two of which intercepted by the Syrian air defense system. No casualties have been reported in the attacks.

Inter-Korean talks

The two Koreas are holding high-level talks in the Demilitarized Zone for the first time in more than two years. Seoul says it will consider a temporary lifting of sanctions against Pyongyang if it is necessary to facilitate the visit of North Koreans to the Winter Olympics next month. The two rivals are trying to achieve a breakthrough in their long-strained ties. South Korean officials said they would focus first on Olympics cooperation in Tuesday’s talks before dealing with tougher political and military issues. The talks were arranged after North Korean leader, Kim Jong-un, made an abrupt push for improved ties with South Korea in his New Year address.

Tunisia clashes

Tunisian police have clashed with protesters in a number of towns and cities over deteriorating economic conditions. The Interior Ministry has confirmed that one demonstrator was killed in the town of Tebourba due to suffocation from inhaling tear gas. Several people were also wounded. Witnesses say the protest turned violent when security forces tried stopping some youths from burning down a government building. Violence also took place in the cities of Thala and Sidi Bouzid. Anger has been building up since the government said from January the first, it would increase the price of gasoline, some goods, as well as taxes as part of austerity measures agreed with its foreign lenders.

‘Anti-Iran enemies defeated’

The Leader of Iran’s Islamic Revolution says the US and Israel plotted the recent unrest in Iranian cities and the MKO terrorists staged it with the financial backing of a stinking-rich Persian Gulf state. Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei said the enemies tried to exploit the rallies held by ordinary people against existing problems, but the people quickly saw into their plot and parted ways with the rioters. The leader said the mass demonstrations staged across the country since December 30 were a response to the enemy plot. Ayatollah Khamenei noted that the legitimate demands of the people should be distinguished from acts of violence and vandalism as well as insults against Islam and the national flag. The leader noted the damage inflicted on Iran by the US will not go unanswered.

Syria UN protest

Syria has written two letters to the United Nations, slamming attacks by the Israeli regime on the Syrian territory. In the letters addressed to the UN Secretary-General and the Security Council, Syria’s Foreign Ministry urged the Security Council to take immediate action and stop the attacks. The ministry says Tel Aviv cannot defend its allied terrorist groups by carrying out such attacks in the Syrian territory. The Syrian army says it has hit an Israeli warplane and intercepted missiles after Tel Aviv attacked a military site near Damascus on Tuesday. Missiles were also fired from the occupied Golan Heights. No casualties have been reported.
