The Iranian men’s national five-a-side football team has managed to secure a spot in the 2018 International Blind Sports Federation (IBSA) Blind Football World Championships, after it beat Thailand in the semi-finals of the IBSA Football 5-a-side Asian Championships.

The Iranian team defeated the Southeast Asian squad 4-3 in a penalty shootout after drawing 1-1 through the game at the National Hockey Stadium in Bukit Jalil, Kuala Lumpur, on Saturday.

In another match of the day, China overcame South Korea, and will face Iran in the title game on Sunday.

The IBSA Football 5-a-side Asian Championships 2017 kicked off in Malaysia on December 9, and will conclude on December 18.

The top three teams will book a slot at next year's World Championships in Madrid, Spain.

Five-a-side football includes a smaller pitch, smaller goals, and a reduced game duration. The penalty area is semi-circular in shape. There are no offside rules and headers are not allowed.  Players are also required to wear shin guards but this is usually at the discretion of the referee.
