India: 16 dead after boat capsizes in Krishna River

Krishna River, India

At least 16 people lost their lives after an overloaded tourist boat capsized in the Krishna River near Andhra Pradesh's town of Vijaywada on Sunday. Twenty people have been rescued as the search and rescue operation continues.

Teams from India's National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Relief Forces were dispatched to the scene.

According to an initial investigation, the private boat operator did not have the necessary license to ferry people, with one of the survivors claiming that there were no life jackets on board.
