Typhoon Damrey hits Vietnam ahead of APEC summit

Typhoon Damrey made landfall in Vietnam on Saturday morning

Typhoon Damrey made landfall in Vietnam on Saturday morning, bringing downpours and heavy winds before an Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit next week.

The strongest typhoon in at least 16 years hit the central and southern Vietnam with the equivalent strength of a Category 2, according to NASA.

Videos shared on social media showed strong gusts and uprooted trees in the southern cities of Nha Trang and Ho Chi Minh City.

The typhoon is expected to bring heavy rain falls across the central region, including the third largest city Da Nang, where the APEC summit will be held from November 8 to 10, local media reported.
