The Iraqi Foreign Ministry as well as the commander of Popular Mobilization Units Hadi al-Ameri have hit back at the US State Department over its designation of the force’s second-in-command as a terrorist. Ameri warned that blacklisting Abu Mahdi al-Mohandis or the popular forces would prompt Iraqi lawmakers to pressure Baghdad into expelling US troops from the country.
