UN should impose sanctions on US until it gets rid of nukes: Analyst

The United Nations

The United Nations should impose sanctions on the United States until it gets rid of its all nuclear weapons and closes its military bases around the world, an American political commentator says.

Bruce Gagnon, the coordinator at the Global Network Against Weapons & Nuclear Power in Space, told Press TV while commenting on the statement US Defense Secretary James Mattis made during his visit to the Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) on Friday.

Standing inside the DMZ that separates the two Koreas, Mattis said there is no change in US policy towards North Korea which he accused of building a nuclear arsenal to "threaten others with catastrophe."

"We stand shoulder to shoulder with you and the Korean people in confronting the threats posed by the Kim Jong-un regime," Mattis said alongside his South Korean counterpart Song Young-moo.

"North Korea provocations continue to threaten regional and world peace, and despite the unanimous condemnation by the United Nations Security Council, they still proceed," he said. "As the US secretary of state has made clear, our goal is not war, but rather the complete verifiable and irreversible denuclearization of the Korean peninsula."

‘Mattis statement example of utter US hypocrisy’

Gagnon said, “This is just the latest other example of utter Washington and Pentagon hypocrisy.”

“The US in recent weeks has been war-gaming at decapitation attack on North Korea. The United States has been flying nuclear B-52 and B1 bombers near the North Korean border."

"The US nuclear submarines" and "a US aircraft carrier and missile destroyer outfitted with the missile defense systems” are part of these war games, he added.

“The United States demands that North Korea get rid of its nukes. At most, they have 15 nuclear weapons while the United States has 6,800. Why doesn’t the world especially the United Nations demand that United States gets rid of its nuclear weapons?” the analyst asked.

“North Korea has performed six nuclear tests while the United States has done thousands. The United States is the only nation to ever use nuclear weapons,” he noted. “The United States has more than 800 military bases around the world in 70 countries. North Korea has none.”

“The United States is arrogant, aggressive and hypocritical. No one anywhere on our planet Earth should pay the slightest bit of attention to Washington’s BS. Don’t follow the US over the cliff. The world should impose sanctions on the United States until it gets rid of all of its nuclear arsenal, and closes all of its foreign military bases,” Gagnon said.
