The Rohingya refugee crisis has been described as a "shocking humanitarian emergency” during an urgent meeting of the UN Council for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief in Geneva.

The UN has estimated that around 500,000 people have fled the region since August 25, amid widespread reports of indiscriminate killings, arson, looting and rape by the Myanmar military.
