Acid attacks in Britain date back to 18 century when Sulfuric acid was produced on massive industrial scales.

In Victorian times acid attacks were called vitriolage. For decades It was mostly used as a weapon by gangs and mostly as a tool of revenge from jilted spouses and lovers. It died down later and throughout 20-century acid attacks were practically non-existent. These days it seems that the stain of Victorian era acid attacks is coming back. But with a big difference.
