Iran’s delegation finishes third at Asian Indoor & Martial Arts Games

The fifth edition of Asian Indoor & Martial Arts Games has come to a close in Turkmenistan, with the Islamic Republic of Iran’s delegation landing in the third slot of the medal count table at the end of the international and multi-sport event.

Iranian sportsmen and women took home a total of 118 medals (36 gold, 23 silvers and 59 bronzes).

Turkmenistan ended on the top of the medal count table with 245 medals (89 gold, 70 silvers and 86 bronzes).

China claimed the second spot with 97 medals (42 gold, 32 silvers, 23 bronzes).

Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Thailand, South Korea, Kyrgyzstan, Vietnam and Hong Kong earned the 4th to 10th places respectively.

On Tuesday, Iranian Greco-Roman wrestler Farshad Belfakeh overpowered Turkmen representative Ali Seýhow 11-2, snatched a gold medal in the final bout of men’s 71-kilogram weight category.

Pejman Poshtam also stood on the top podium in the 75-kilogram class.

Furthermore, Mahdi Ebrahimi and Saman Azizi clinched two gold medals for Iran in the 80-kilogram and 85-kilogram weight sections.

Amirhossein Hosseini and Behnam Mahdizadeh Arpatapeh added two more gold medals to Iran's tally at the sporting event in the 98-kilogram and 130-kilogram weight divisions.

In the men's 59-kilogram and 66-kilogram weight categories, Mohsen Hajipour and Amin Souri picked up two silver medals.

Iran men's national futsal team also struck its fifth consecutive Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games men's futsal gold on Tuesday, when it thrashed the Uzbek squad 7-1 in the final.

Iran asserted its dominance early on and Mahdi Javid took the lead in the fourth minute. Javid scored again in the ninth minute to give the Iranian outfit a 2-0 cushion at the break.

In the second half, Iranian futsal players jabbed five more goals through Ali Asghar Hassanzadeh in the 21st and 37th minutes, Hamid Ahmadidazaj in the 31st and Javid in the 32nd and 36th minute.

Davron Choriev scored Uzbekistan’s consolation in the 29th minute.

In the men’s low kick minus 81-kilogram final, Iranian kickboxer defeated his Uzbek opponent Javokhir Elboev 3-0, and claimed the gold medal.

Hossein Karami picked up a silver medal for the Islamic Republic of Iran in the Men's Full Contact minus 75-kilogram competitions. 

Hamid Amni also clinched a bronze medal in the men's full contact minus 67-kilogram contests.

In the men's point fighting minus 79-kilogram final, Mohammad Pourfaraj beat his Uzbek rival Jakhongir Khusanov 15-5, and won the yellow medal.

Additionally, Iranian cueist Soheil Vahedi displayed noteworthy skills in the men's snooker singles, and earned a bronze medal.

The 2017 Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games, which is the 5th edition of the continental tournament, opened in the Turkmen capital city of Ashgabat on September 17, and finished on September 27.
