Aleppo liberation a blow to US plans in Mideast: Analyst
With the Syrian army about to recapture eastern Aleppo, the most remarkable gains for the Arab nation are about to realize. Aleppo's liberation also marks a serious blow to the US-led regime change plan in Syria.
Lawrence J. Korb, a US foreign policy and national security analyst from Washington, believes the liberation of Aleppo does not mean a failure for the US and that it will not change anything on the ground.
“I think it's important to keep in mind [that] the US is involved in Syria only to fight ISIS [Daesh]," he told Press TV on Monday night.
Korb said he believed the Syrian government was not going to control the whole country and so-called Free Syrian Army, which is supported by the US, Turkey and other countries, were going to remain a force to be reckoned with.
“Now, the real question is who's going to pay to rebuild cities like Aleppo which are horrible," he added.
Scott Rickard, a political analyst and former American intelligence linguist from Tampa, accused Korb of repeating the same rhetoric the US mainstream media are trying to impose on the American people.
"What Mr. Korb says is the typical rhetoric one can see on the mainstream media such as Newsweek, Washington Post, and New York Times," Rickard said.
"This is exactly the position that the Western propaganda apparatus has posed to the American people and the West in the recent years," he added.
Rickard said the US media are portraying Assad "as a president who is doing terrible things to his innocent people," while they are foreign mercenaries hired by Washington and its Arab allies who want to turn Syria into a failed state.
“What really has happened here is basically a failed regime change effort and thankfully for the Russians and the Chinese and the Iranians, the Syrian people have had an opportunity to save their country," he said.
The analyst said the countries which have participated in the war against the Syrian nation must shoulder the responsibility to rebuild the country’s infrastructure.
“Every single one of the countries that I mentioned that caused this, the United States and all their NATO allies in the Persian Gulf should go to the criminal court of The Hague," he said.
