UN chief slams Israeli settlement expansions

Here is a round-up of global news developments:

  • The United Nations Secretary General has slammed Israel’s settlement expansions, calling for an end to Tel Aviv’s rule over Palestinian territories. Ban Ki-moon said Israeli data shows that the period starting from April has seen the highest number of settlement projects in 3 years.
  • A Palestinian youth has succumbed to his wounds after being shot by Israeli soldiers in the West Bank city of al-Khalil also known as Hebron. Ahmad al-Sarahin was injured after Israeli soldiers stormed his house earlier in the day. The victim’s father was also arrested in the raid.
  • Yemen’s Ansarullah fighters say they have clashed with Saudi troops in the kingdom’s Jizan region. They say they have captured a mountain and a place called al-Romaih, and killed a Saudi trooper. But the Saudis reject this, saying they repelled the attack and killed 25 Yemeni fighters and injured dozens more.
  • Russia’s defense ministry has accused the US of not providing the exact location of opposition groups included in the Syria ceasefire agreement. Moscow has also accused Washington of failing to fulfill its obligations under the deal. Meanwhile, Moscow says US-backed militants are not abiding by the agreement.
  • Human Rights Watch has condemned Turkey and Kurdish forces over the deaths of at least 24 civilians in Syria. The group slammed Turkey for failing to pinpoint the target in its airstrikes in a village near Jarablus. The rights group also accused pro-Kurdish forces of grouping with civilians in the area.
  • Nearly a dozen people have been injured in clashes between French police and demonstrators in the city of Nantes and the capital Paris. The violence erupted amid nationwide rallies against labor law reforms that were adopted by parliament in July. Union leaders are calling for workers to keep the momentum and stage new strikes.
  • French president Francois Hollande warns of a crisis at the foundation of the EU. In a joint press conference with Germany's chancellor Angela Merkel, Hollande stressed the need for a common voice in the bloc. Merkel also called for a realistic agenda to address the worries and hopes of European citizens.
  • European Parliament President Martin Schulz has warned about the possible victory of Donald Trump in US presidential election. Schulz said Trump would be problematic for the entire world. He said if the controversial billionaire makes his way into the White House, he will spur on copycats across Europe.
