Press TV has talked to Christopher Walker, a political commentator from London, about a ceasefire in the Syrian city of Aleppo and what it means for government forces.

The following is a rough transcription of the interview:

Press TV: Aleppo is strategically important for the Syrian army and its war against militants. How much further can this drive to regain Aleppo go on?

Walker: I think it's got some steam in it now because the recent momentum has been very much in favor of the Syrian army. And I think it's absolutely key to the future of President Assad that Aleppo does not stay in any sort of rebel control and that they are eliminated. It is such a vital not only strategic city but of course one with enormous symbolic value. Though, it has to be said that much of it has in recent months been turned to rubble by the intense fighting.

Press TV: At the same time we're also seeing efforts by the US to reach an agreement with Russia for a ceasefire in Syria that will also include Aleppo and for demilitarizing the famous Castello Road. Do you think that is something the Syrian government will sign on to?

Walker: I think they may do that if they feel that it's to their advantage, particularly if Mr. Putin decides that it is something that should be done. But of course they will be weary. The Castello Road really is an absolute arterial lifeline and they would not want anything to look as [if] they were handing it over or in any way allowing the terrorists to regroup to fight again over it.

Press TV: We have seen the UN lead this effort of localized ceasefires to allow civilians to be evacuated and militants, who want to surrender to the government, to give up their arms and surrender. Is this something we can see happen in Aleppo?

Walker: It is a possibility. It is actually probably the only way that the ceasefire could work in Aleppo - that strategic city. Because, otherwise, it will break down almost immediately. But this step-by-step little areas is an important way of advancing [the] ceasefire and slowly spreading its message.
