US drone attacks kill 7 people in Yemen

Here is a round-up of global news developments:

  • At least 7 people have been killed in 2 US drone attacks in Yemen. 3 people died when a rocket hit their vehicle in a desert area in Ma’rib province. Another 4 people were killed when their vehicle was taken out by a US drone in the southern Yemeni province of Shabwa.
     
  • The Turkish army and militants of the so-called Free Syrian Army have seized the Syrian town of Jarablus as part of an operation allegedly against Daesh terrorists and Syrian Kurds. According to a US official, Washington has provided Ankara with air support, intelligence and advisers in its incursion.
     
  • Russia has warned that Turkey’s military incursion into Syria could increase the risk of civilian casualties. Russia's Foreign Ministry says the operation can worsen the situation in the conflict zone and flare up ethnic tensions between Kurds and Arabs. The Syrian Foreign Ministry has also condemned Turkey’s military incursion.
     
  • The leader of Iran’s Islamic Revolution has slammed the US for its failure to abide by its commitments stipulated in the nuclear agreement. Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei says Washington proved to be untrustworthy given its violations of the JCPOA. He added that recent actions revealed that none of the US administrations are reliable.
     
  • At least 1 student has been killed and over a dozen have been wounded when gunmen attacked the American University of Afghanistan in Kabul. Reports say the gunfire was followed by several explosions. The attack left terrified students trapped inside classrooms tweeting for help. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack.
     
  • Ukrainians celebrate the 25th anniversary of their country’s independence from the former Soviet Union. Addressing the participants in a ceremony marking the occasion, Ukraine’s President Petro Poroshenko said his country has made progress by building up its army from scratch. Ukraine’s independence anniversary is marked amid tensions with Russia over Crimea.
     
  • A powerful 6.8 magnitude quake has rocked central Myanmar with no immediate reports of casualties. According to the US geological survey, it struck 143 kilometers west of the city of Meiktila. Witnesses say the quake shook buildings in several areas including Myanmar's biggest city of Yangon.
     
  • At least 120 people have been killed after a strong earthquake and a series of aftershocks struck central Italy. The death toll keeps rising as rescue workers scramble to reach survivors buried under the rubble. The 6.2 magnitude quake has caused serious damage to a number of towns and villages.
