Here is a round-up of global news developments:

  • Iran’s parliament speaker has urged plans to launch a nuclear enrichment plant in response to the US wrench-throwing tactics meant to impede the implementation of Tehran's nuclear deal reached last year. Ali Larijani says the plant should be capable of conducting varying levels of uranium enrichment.
  • The Syrian government has called on the UN Security Council to condemn the killing of over 120 civilians in a US-led airstrike. French warplanes pounded a village near the border with Turkey. Most of the victims were women and children. The US-led coalition says the pilots mistook the civilians for terrorists.
  • French lawmakers at the National Assembly have voted to extend the country's state of emergency for six more months. During the parliamentary session, Prime Minister Manuel Valls warned of more terror attacks, urging the people to learn to live with the threat.
  • Venezuelan opposition leaders say they're one step closer to a recall referendum against President Nicolas Maduro this year. They've posted on Twitter documents that they say validate nearly four-hundred thousand signatures requesting the referendum. The number is twice the total needed to trigger the next stage in the process.
  • UK police say the Brexit has drastically pushed up the hate crime rate in the country. The Metropolitan Police says it has detained over 400 suspects since the result of the EU referendum was out on June 24. The figure has nearly doubled compared to the number of offenses before the vote.
  • The Italian coastguard has rescued some 3200 refugees trying to cross the Mediterranean. Italian Navy vessels, along with British and Spanish ships, conducted dozens of operations to save sinking boats off Libya. The refugees, on board more than two dozen boats, were fleeing war-torn countries in Africa and Asia.
  • The US city of Cleveland has been the scene of a protest rally against Donald Trump, just as he was formally nominated by the Republican National Convention as the party's candidate for president. The protesters called Trump a fascist and denounced his xenophobic rhetoric.
  • Violent clashes have continued in Indian-controlled Kashmir despite a strict curfew in place for the eleventh day. Indian troops fired live ammunition, pellet guns and tear gas to disperse the protesters. The latest upsurge in violence began when Indian forces killed a prominent pro-independence Kashmiri figure.
