Death toll from Baghdad blast exceeds 200

Here is a round-up of global news developments:

  • The death toll from one of the deadliest explosions ever to hit the Iraqi capital Baghdad, has now exceeded 200. A previous body count of 123 has been revised up to 213. Around 200 others have also been injured.
  • Iran’s foreign minister says the country will not give up the fight against terrorism. In reaction to the recent terror attacks in Turkey, Bangladesh and Iraq, Mohammad Javad Zarif has written on his Twitter page that the campaign against terror must go on as long as terrorists are out there.
  • There's been a bomb attack near the US consulate in the city of Jeddah in Saudi Arabia. A bomber blew up his explosives near the diplomatic mission, injuring two security guards . Most of the consulate staff have reportedly moved offices to a new location.
  • Kuwait says it has thwarted three Daesh terrorist plots, including an attempt to blow up a Shia mosque. The Interior Ministry says 5 Kuwaiti nationals have been apprehended in this connection, adding they've all confessed to plotting terror attacks in the Persian Gulf country.
  • Australia’s opposition leader Bill Shorten is calling on Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull to step down. He has dubbed Turnbull the David Cameron of the southern hemisphere. The call follows the weekend general elections that failed to deliver an immediate winner.
  • Like other Muslims across the world, Afghans are busy preparing for Eid-al Fitr, a celebration that marks the end of the fasting month of Ramadan. This comes as insecurity remains the number one concern of Afghan people, with deadly bombings plaguing the country.
  • Israeli forces have carried out a second attack in the occupied West Bank in the past 24 hours. They've stormed into the town of Dura near the southern city of al-Khalil, also known as Hebron. A number of Palestinians have reportedly been wounded in clashes following the raid.
  • Israel is planning to build hundreds of new settler units in the occupied Jerusalem al-Quds. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his Minister of Military Affairs Avigdor Lieberman have approved the construction of some 800 units in and around East al-Quds.
