UK wants EU advantages, not its burdens: Analyst

Press TV has interviewed Ian Williams, an analyst with Foreign Policy in Focus, and Jack Rasmus, a professor of political economy, to talk about recent developments regarding the UK’s membership in the European Union (EU).

Williams says British Conservative and Labour parties want to benefit from the advantages of being a member of the EU while not having to undertake the responsibilities that come with that membership.

The British Conservative Party has been profoundly xenophobic and anti-European, he says, but Britain has stayed in the EU because its bankers want the benefits of EU membership.

He says the Labour Party also wants the monetary advantages of being a member of the EU, but does not want any of the regulations about social issues such as protecting poor people and providing social services.

The analyst warns that the UK’s potential exit from the EU would lead to the continuation of the “domination of German bankers” over the bloc.

Rasmus, for his part, says Britain wants the advantages of exports and imports as a member of the EU, but it does not want its banking system to be subject to the regulations of the bloc or the economic crisis that has stricken it.
