Czech president says Turkey's actions depict it Daesh ally
Czech President Milos Zeman has alleged that Turkey’s actions depict the country as more representative of the Daesh terrorist group than a Western nation, censuring the idea of Ankara’s EU membership.
Zeman further dismissed the EU’s plan to disburse €3 billion ($ 3.28 billion) to the Turkish government as an aid package for hosting 2.2 million Syrian refugees in the country and preventing them from reaching mainland Europe, Sputnik reported Sunday, citing local Czesh media outlets.
"The Roman Empire, before it collapsed, too, paid tribute money to barbarians [for them not to pilfer its territory]," Zeman stated, noting that Turkey usually acts like a Daesh ally rather than that of the West, despite being a NATO member.
"I think Turkey is indeed a member of NATO, but sometimes behaves as if it’s more an ally of Daesh,” said the Czech leader, adding that the Turkish government facilitates the transfer of illicit oil from Syria to finance the notorious terrorist group.
He noted that he does not see “danger in Islam as such” but in “transferring these habits to Europe.”
In November, Turkey signed an accord with the EU at a summit in Brussels, according to which the country will help stem the flow of refugees to Europe in return for €3 billion.
Zeman further stated that Brussels, EU's de facto capital, must regard Ankara with "caution," saying that Turkey is not a purely European nation and should not be treated like EU states.
