Cameron: Syria strikes to bring political settlement

British Prime Minister David Cameron says that British air strikes on the targets of ISIL militants also known as Daesh in Syria will help to bring about a political settlement in the long term.

Cameron who is on an official visit to Bulgaria said the Royal Air Force had sent more Typhoon and Tornado jets to its base in Cyprus, from where Britain is launching air strikes on ISIL in both Iraq and now Syria.

“The strikes actually help to bring about a political settlement because of course the strikes take the action to Daesh which is everybody's enemy and we do need to have a moderate opposition in Syria that can be part of a future government of Syria. So the political process and the action against Daesh to keep us safe at home, they go hand in hand," he said.

The British contribution forms only a tiny part of US-led airstrikes which has been bombing ISIL in Iraq and Syria for more than a year with hundreds of aircraft.

Previously, the small British contingent participated in strikes on Iraq but not in Syria.

The UK carried out its first bombing of Daesh (ISIL) positions in Syria on Wednesday after the government won a parliamentary debate on an air campaign against the Takfiri militant group there.

The government has not yet disclosed details of the attack but media reports have cited British Defense Minister Michael Fallon as saying that UK bombers attacked oilfields in eastern Syria.

The move followed a 10-hour debate held on Wednesday, with some 397 MPs voting in favor of the plan while 223 voted against the UK extending its airstrikes on Daesh targets from Iraq into Syria.

Cameron was one of the adamant supporters of the move to extend the current air campaign as part of a US-led coalition against purported Takfiri positions in Iraq.

A London-based analyst says the British Prime Minister is lying his head off as in fact his is consulting with the enemy. It means that you have those wiht whom you are at war.

Speaking to Press TV’s UK Desk, Rodney Shakespeare went on saying that said the UK is cooperating with the very countries which are supporting ISIL. He cited Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the US as the main sponsor of ISIL.
