Thousands of people have taken to the streets in the French city of Toulouse to protest against “barbarity” and to show solidarity with the victims of the last week’s terrorist attacks in Paris.

More than 10,000 people marched in a silent rally across the southwestern city on Saturday, carrying banners reading “For freedom and peace, against barbarity”, while police surrounded the crowd.

“It is a silence of contemplation, but also determination,” said Bernard Dedeban, secretary general of the FSU trade union, one of the organizers of the demonstration.

The Saturday march was the second this week staged in Toulouse to condemn terrorism and commemorate with the victims of the Paris attacks.

Similar rallies have been held in several other cities across France.

Shortly after the attacks in Paris, President Francois Hollande declared a state of emergency for 12 days. The parliament later extended the emergency for three months, which will go into effect from November 26.

On November 13, a series of coordinated terrorist attacks, claimed by the Daesh Takfiri terrorist group, brought shock and horror to the French capital. Some 130 people were killed and 350 others were injured in the horrendous attacks.
