Hundreds of Tunisian demonstrators, including political figures, have held a rally in the capital to express their support for the Palestinian uprising against the Israeli regime.

Waving Tunisian and Palestinian flags as well as that of the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas, the protesters assembled in Tunis’ main thoroughfare, Bourguiba Avenue, on Saturday.

The pro-Palestinian demonstration was called by Ennahda Party.

“This is essentially a symbolic action to show our support for the Palestinian cause and uprising,” said Sahbi Atig, a lawmaker with Ennahda.

Houcine Jaziri, who was previously a member of an Ennahda-led coalition government, also said the protesters are all “united behind the Palestinian cause.”

The rally comes as tensions have been running high over the past several weeks between Israeli forces and Palestinians in the occupied territories.

In August, Tel Aviv imposed restrictions on the entry of Palestinian worshipers into the al-Aqsa Mosque in East al-Quds (Jerusalem). The move sparked the recent clashes between Israeli forces and Palestinian protesters.

Palestinians are also angry at increasing violence by Israeli settlers at the al-Aqsa Mosque compound, and their attacks on Palestinian properties. Palestinians say the Tel Aviv regime seeks to change the status quo of the compound.

According to Palestinian media, nearly 80 Palestinians have so far been killed by Israeli forces since the beginning of October.

Israeli forces killed one Palestinian in the occupied West Bank and another in the besieged Gaza Strip on Friday.
