Hillary Clinton leads fellow Democrat Bernie Sanders in New Hampshire poll

Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton has overtaken her Democratic rival, Senator Bernie Sanders, by a three-percent margin in the key primary state of New Hampshire.

According to the Monmouth University poll released on Tuesday, 48 percent of Democratic voters in the state now support Clinton while 45 percent stand behind Sanders.

Clinton has gained seven percentage points since a Monmouth University poll in September while Sanders has taken a 4-point dip.

According to the poll, her lead came primarily as a result of increased support from women, up 14 points since September, and voters over the age of 50, also up 14 points.

Sanders, on the other hand, continues to maintain an advantage among men, younger voters, registered independents and those likely to vote for the first time.

While primary polls this early before the 2016 election do not provide a clear prediction of the eventual winner, the latest poll adds to a shifting trend in New Hampshire.

While Sanders held a strong lead against Clinton throughout August and September, recent polls showed a narrowing gap between the two.

Monmouth University surveyed 403 New Hampshire Democratic primary voters using live telephone interviews from October 29 through November 1 and of the last seven polls conducted in the state, Clinton leads in four and Sanders leads in three.
